Ruling party wins Sri Lanka parliamentary elections


In the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka, which were held on August 5, the party of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa won the People's Front of Sri Lanka. According to the results of the vote cited by the agency, 146 out of 225 seats in parliament were won by the party of the prime minister, who is the brother of the country's president Gotabai Rajapaksa. The allies of the ruling party were able to get five more seats. Thus, the winners in parliament gained a constitutional majority of two-thirds of the seats. According to the election committee of Sri Lanka, more than 70% of the approximately 16 million registered voters took part in the elections of the new parliament on August 5. Of the 225 deputies elected for a five-year term, 196 are elected according to a multi-mandate system, and 29 according to party lists.
